Stuff That Grows When No-one is Watching!
Written by Tamara on February 25, 2009 in News
Just thinking that I will do the disclaimer bit first…we are not dirty people, we clean our house well and often, we make sure things dry out if they get wet, BUT…we DO live in the Tropics!! All this to say…we have, over the past few weeks, been joined by colonies of mould spores throughout our home that would make the strongest of stomachs curl.
It’s reassuring (if we can put it like that) when we hear that most homes in Townsville have been hit just as bad this year with the black and green fluffy stuff that turns up when you have your back turned.
For those that are clueless to living in The Tropics (us included it would seem this year) there is not a thing a house occupant can do when it rains for more than 40 days and 40 nights straight (maybe build an Ark) in 97% humidity to prevent mould from popping up in places you almost didn’t know existed.
We took some photos (for prosperity sake…can you believe it?) but of course they don’t do justice to how fluffy and thick this mould stuff got.
We "googled" high and low to find a good method for getting this toxic substance out of our home…the most common method being bleach. However, not everything can withstand bleach. So, we took to the Vinegar. Mr Google says it kills 85%! That statistic was all we had to work with…other than sell our home and move to Canada! Wink, wink!!![]()
Items lost to mould:
- 2 suitcases
- Decorative sticks in vase
- Bill’s computer bag
- Our health!
Places we NEVER thought possible:
- Mould spores (like little flower buds) growing through a crack in the paintwork (see the photo!)
And yes….I am grateful that we still do have our home…even with the nasty pollutant that is possibly still lurking within. The huge mould outbreak hit its peak as we were hearing about all the devastating bush fires and floods our nation was struggling with. Of course it put things into perspective for us.
